Ruiz vs Joshua : Saturday night – but
will the rematch live up to the hype? We’re expecting a thriller, as the
British boxer, 30, looks to reclaim his WBA, IBF and WBO world titles
having suffered a shock defeat to the Mexican in New York last June.
Joshua was unbeaten until the unfancied
Ruiz Jr. stepped in as last minute replacement for Jarrell Miller, who
failed three drug tests. Jaws hit the floor (literally) when Ruiz proved
too much for Joshua in the Round 7.
Could Saturday night serve up another
big upset? Joshua says he’s “going to stay cool and focused” in an
attempt to pick off his unpredictable opponent in clinical style.
Ruiz, meanwhile, says he’s “ready to
rock ‘n’ roll”, and that having starting training at the age of six to
win championship belts, he’ll “die trying to keep them”.

Gennadiy Golovkin and Sergiy Derevyanchenko will clash for the vacant IBF World Middleweight title on Saturday October 5 at Madison Square Garden in New York, live on DAZN, in a fight brought to you by GGG Promotions and Matchroom Boxing USA in association with DiBella Entertainment
GOLOVKIN HAS THE FEAR FACTOR AGAINST DEREVYANCHENKO
New York, NY (August 23, 2019) Gennady “GGG” Golovkin believes his clash with Sergiy Derevyanchenko
will be a classic when they meet for the vacant IBF World Middleweight
title on Saturday October 5 at Madison Square Garden in New York, live
on DAZN.
Golovkin (39-1-1 35 KOs) and Derevyanchenko (13-1 10 KOs) met at a
press conference at the Mecca of Boxing yesterday and both men stated
their excitement for what promises to be a thrill a minute battle for
the belt that Golovkin used to hold, and that Derevyanchenko has
challenged for.
Former unified king Golovkin is gunning to regain the crown he held
for three years as the Kazakh star targets returning to World champion
status and meetings with the other champions at 160lbs. Derevyanchenko
has plans to derail that journey though and came close to landing the
IBF strap himself in October at the Hulu Theater at MSG, being edged out
on a split decision against Golovkin’s old foe Daniel Jacobs.
“I’m so excited,” said Golovkin. “First of all, I’m happy to be back
home, my second home. Thank you to my family at Madison Square Garden
for always supporting me. Of course, I’m very excited right now. Right
now, I work with the best people from boxing.
“I have the best opponent, Sergiy. I’ve known him for a long time and
he’s a very good fighter. This is a real fight. I’m a little bit scared
because he’s good. I know his team is very strong. And I’m scared
because he looks good. He looks strong. He feels it’s his time right
now. Maybe – this is boxing, nobody knows. So if you want to watch a
real show, a real fight, come to MSG on October 5 or watch live on
DAZN.”
“I’m really excited and happy to be at Madison Square Garden,” said
Derevyanchenko. “Thank you to my team, and I want to give thanks to
Gennady Golovkin for the opportunity as well. I know exactly who I’m
getting in the ring with. He’s the former Middleweight champion of the
world, one of the best fighters in the world, but his time is coming to
an end and I want to be the one that makes that time come to an end.”
Gennady Golovkin
will face off with Sergiy Derevyanchenko for the vacant IBF middleweight
title on October 5 at Madison Square Garden in New York, USA.
The former unified champion is attempting to win back one of his old
belts after being beaten for the first time by Canelo Alvarez last year.
“Everyone knows that I consider Madison Square Garden as my home away
from home and there is nothing better than fighting there again. It is
old school,” said Golovkin.
“On October 5, it’s going to be a good fight. Every time I enter the
ring I try to give my fans the fight they want to see, the show they
deserve.
“This will be such a fight. We will bring back ‘Big Drama Show’ to the ring of The Garden and to DAZN.
“Don’t miss it. You will see everything you love in the sport of boxing. See you in New York.”
Watch live from Madison Square Garden as Gennadiy Golovkin and Sergiy
Derevyanchenko announce their August 5th fight for the IBF middleweight
championship.
Gennady Golovkin and Sergiy Derevyanchenko agreed to terms on Tuesday to fight for a vacant middleweight title on October 5, according to ESPN.
The bout is set to take place at Madison Square
Garden in New York City and stream on DAZN. The contracts for the fight
are scheduled to be signed on Wednesday after both sides negotiated for
three weeks, reports ESPN.
Golovkin (39-1-1, 35 KOs) and Derevyanchenko (13-1,
10 KOs) will fight for the International Boxing Federation's 160-pound
world title after it was stripped from Canelo Alvarez on August 1.
Alvarez lost it after failing to finalize a deal with Derevyanchenko,
the mandatory challenger. Golovkin, who previously held the belt, is the
next contender in IBF's rankings.
Derevyanchenko enters the October fight coming off a
decision win over Jack Culcay on April 13. He bounced back to defeat
Culcay after losing a shot at the IBF title against Daniel Jacobs last
Ocotber.
Word leaked yesterday evening,
and now it’s official: Gennadiy Golovkin will face Sergiy
Derevyanchenko for the vacant IBF middleweight title on Oct. 5 from
Madison Square Garden, live on DAZN.Golovkin (39-1, 35 KO) won the IBF belt back in Oct.
2015, stopping David Lemieux in the eighth round of an HBO pay-per-view
main event at MSG. He defended it three times before being questionably
stripped in the spring of 2018, after Canelo Alvarez pulled out of a
scheduled rematch in May following a failed drug test. Derevyanchenko
(13-1, 10 KO) had been his mandatory, and Golovkin failed to make that
defense, instead facing Vanes Martirosyan in a short-notice bout on May
5, which the IBF did not sanction as a title defense.
Derevyanchenko instead fought Daniel Jacobs for the
vacant title in Oct. 2018, losing a split decision at the Hulu Theater
at MSG. Jacobs then faced Canelo this past May in a unification, losing
the belt to Alvarez. Meanwhile, Derevyanchenko had beaten Jack Culcay in
an eliminator on April 13.
After Alvarez and Derevyanchenko failed to come to terms,
the IBF stripped Canelo, and now here we are with GGG-Derevyanchenko
after all that.
“Everyone knows that I consider Madison Square Garden as
my home away from home and there is nothing better than fighting there
again. It is old school,” said Golovkin. “On Oct. 5, it’s going to be a
good fight. Every time I enter the ring I try to give my fans the fight
they want to see, the show they deserve. This will be such a fight. We
will bring back Big Drama Show to the ring of The Garden and to DAZN.
Don’t miss it. You will see everything you love in the sport of boxing.
See you in New York.”
“I’m very excited that my team has secured another
opportunity for me to fight for the middleweight championship of the
world,” said Derevyanchenko. “I have a great deal of respect for GGG and
looking forward to proving in the ring that I will be up to challenge
and fulfill my lifelong dream of becoming a world champion. Those in
attendance at Madison Square Garden and watching on DAZN will see an
outstanding battle on Saturday October 5 — I can’t wait to enter the
ring.”
Golovkin, 37, returned to the ring for the first fight on
his DAZN contract on June 8, knocking out overmatched Steve Rolls in
the fourth round. It was also Golovkin’s first fight with new trainer
Johnathon Banks, after a big public parting with Abel Sanchez following
last year’s narrow loss to Alvarez in their rematch.
Much of the talk with Golovkin and Canelo both being
signed to big money DAZN deals was that the streaming service badly
wanted the two to meet in a lucrative third fight in September. That
didn’t come to pass. Now, we have GGG-Derevyanchenko, and it seems
likely we’ll see Canelo faces Demetrius Andrade by the end of the year,
too.
If both were to win, that would set them up for a
much-anticipated third fight in May 2020, in theory, which would be a
full middleweight unification if not for the fact that the WBC
“elevated” Alvarez to a title position (“franchise champion”) that
doesn’t really exist in order to make Jermall Charlo their “world
champion.”
Boxing goofiness aside, there’s a clear path to
Canelo-GGG III, but neither guy has it easy next. Derevyanchenko can
fight — he gave Jacobs a hell of a battle — and Andrade doesn’t figure
to be easy for Alvarez, either. As we’ve said before, these may not be
the fights most people wanted right now, but they’re good, high-level
matchups all the same.
